Native Plantings Initiative

Late Spring 2024 The City of Clearwater began work on a Native Planting Initiative, that was approved in 2021. The project, funded by a grant from Wright County, replaced lawn turf with native prairie plantings in two stormwater drainage ponds along Huber Avenue and the boulevard of Kelsey Ave. Minnesota Native Landscapes, Inc. was contracted to handle the preparation, seeding, and mulching of the designated areas. This initiative not only enhances local biodiversity but also improves stormwater management and creates a more sustainable landscape.

This project has several benefits, including:

  • Improve water filtration, soil moisture retention and infiltration.
  • Helps prevent soil erosion through the plant's deep root structures.
  • Native plants are drought tolerant.
  • Cost efficient by reducing maintenance costs, including fuel use and staff time.
  • Provides habitat for wildlife and pollinators.
  • Enhance the aesthetics of the neighboring community.

City staff have worked closely with Minnesota Native Landscapes, Inc., to plan and execute this project with the utmost consideration for the surrounding environment and community. This is a long-term project that will be done in phases over several years, until the plantings reach maturity. The next phase will be ongoing maintenance and monitoring to ensure the health and success of the plantings over the coming years. With the installation complete, the city looks forward to the long-term benefits these native plants provide for the environment and the community.
